The Slave Dancer – The Spaniard

Filed under: Uncategorized — brogle13 at 12:10 pm on Friday, April 16, 2010

Dear Students,

Unfortunately, The Slave Dancer is not getting any more uplifting as we continue our journey across the Atlantic, but on the bright side, your ideas for your strategies for reading have really made excellent progress.

You are going to respond twice for this posting.  For your initial response, I would like you to again choose any one or two of your best connections, predictions, evaluations, etc. from The Spaniard to share.  For your second response, you will read your fellow classmates’ responses then find one or two respond to.  Be sure you include the name of the person that you are writing in response to.

I am looking forward to the interesting conversations and reactions you come up with!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brogle

Dear Students,

Again, I am really happy to see all of your responses to the reading we have done in The Slave Dancer.  Your ideas show some great understanding of the novel.  This time your responses will be taken as a grade so remember to follow the criteria on the rubric (demonstrate understanding of the discussion question or prompt while including relevant story details and do not forget to follow the grammar rules or to complete your response by the due date).

Now for your questions…Do you think it is possible to get used to, or accept, disagreeable and unpleasant conditions if there seems to be no alternative?  What emotional impact did this account of enslavement have on you?

Looking forward to your responses,

Mrs. Brogle

Now for your questions…Do you think that Nightjohn was courageous or foolish to return to the South after his escape?  Why do you think the author of this book painted such a vivid picture of the treatment slaves received?

Looking forward to your responses,

Greetings!

I am pleased with your responses on the initial post of the blog. I am looking forward to reading more of your ideas. After reading more about Jessie’s plight now aboard The Moonlight and recording some of your evaluations, connections, predictions, etc. in your notebook, choose a thoughtful idea or two to share. Nightjohn – Chapter 1

Welcome to our Language Arts blog!  I am looking forward to blogging about Nightjohn and hearing all of your ideas about what you are learning.  After reading the first chapter of the novel, what are your first impressions?  You probably noticed that it is written in nonstandard English.  This is called vernacular, or slang.  Describe how this language gives “color” or “flavor” to a character’s words.  What does this language reveal about the narrator?

Remember to follow the Blogging Guidelines discussed in class.  Also, please read your classmates’ responses so you can see how others’ ideas compare to yours.

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Brogle

Welcome to our Language Arts Blog!  I am looking forward to blogging while we read The Slave Dancer together.  It will be a great way to share ideas about our learning.  To begin, I would like to ask about your first impressions of the novel after reading the first chapter. How would you respond to taking part in an activity you believed was wrong?  Would you take a stand?  What if taking a stand meant serious consequences for you?

As you respond, please remember to follow the Blogging Guidelines discussed in class.  Also, be sure to read your classmates’ responses to gather others’ ideas about what we are reading.

Happy Reading,
Mrs. Brogle
